The museum of the future. Multimedia exposition. Opportunities, technologies, specificity

What will the museum of the future be like? How will the interactive multimedia visualization change the museum space and attract the audience to museums and exhibitions?

Our technical director Kirill Voskresenski made a report “ Multimedia exposition in a museum. Opportunities, technologies, specificity” at the “Innovational solutions for the museum of the 21st century” conference.

He told the audience how to expand the opportunities of the museum space by means of modern interactive technologies and what multimedia opportunities exist nowadays.

Multimedia technologies put modern museums closer to entertaining grounds and amusement parks. People want to receive the information in an interactive and game way.

At the same time it is important that multimedia devices were not just result-oriented, and they should not be just a trendy decoration in a museum.

With the new technologies development and solutions of their use, different tools are being created to allow to integrate the virtual content in the museum space.

The perception of the information by its studying (persuing) is expulsed by interactive forms. The reason for it is that interactive technologies trigger emotional experience of the user. Now it is the time to erase the boundaries between education and entertainment.

What are the possible ways of interactive presentation of the information in museums?

  • Multimedia models

    • Projection installations
    • 3D mapping
    • Exhibit items demonstration by means of the augmented reality (AR)
    • AR guides
    • Virtual reality creation VR and VR 360.
    • Interactive souvenirs
    • Mobile apps
    • Interactive software

Multimedia models

What are the main features and advantages of the multimedia models?

  • Combination of a real model with the multimedia content
  • Interactive control and user’s operations with the content
  • Visual expression due to real objects use
  • Visual appeal and maximum informational value (demonstration of the objects and processes, impossible to show by other means)

Multimedia models can be improved by means of the augmented reality technology – the user will direct the sight of the camera to separate elements of the real model using a tablet, a smartphone or augmented reality glasses, and at that time the dynamic content will be demonstrated.

The augmented reality for the exhibit items presentation complements the real world with virtual objects and information. It is possible due to visual overlapping of the virtual objects on real exhibit items. Thus it is possible to make items alive, and the information presentation gets highly-charged and visual at the same time.

AR-guides

Standard audio-guides will be changed gradually by the augmented reality guides (AR-guides).  What is its principal difference? AR -guides will contain not only audio information, but also a great amount of visual information. The system of marks on the exposition will allow a user to orient himself easily among lots of exhibit items and get interesting information about them.

Museum in virtual space

Virtual reality – is a technically recreated world, transmitted to a person through his perception and separating him from the real world.

This technology offers a lot of opportunities for the museum space, which never existed before. Now it is possible to recreated the objects, buildings and even cities disappeared long ago, demonstrate historical events and go inside worlds with the visitors, show the whole periods with the full plunging inside a tourist group at museum space.

What are the VR – formats advantages?

  • Creation of the museum’s virtual architectural space
  • Opportunity to provide access to all exhibit items from the archives, which are not exposed
  • It is not necessary to be limited by physical space
  • Opportunity for users to walk through the museum’s rooms with the maximum plunging without necessity to leave their town (or even home)

Souvenirs with augmented reality

An unusual gift, which can be taken home after the visit to the museum, will be a pleasant final point of any excursion and a good reminder, and the mobile app, which will make it “alive”, will allow to inform the user about new items in the exposition and to invite them to different events.

Interactive software

Interactive software based on the the x-ray scanning process imitation, will allow to take the user inside the items and to show them everything that is hidden. Interactive element allows visitors to do “scanning” themselves by means of the screen movement and to choose the “depth” of the X-raying by means of the sensor menu.

The opportunities of the interactive multimedia equipment of the museum are not only limited by everything we have just described. There are a lot of options. It may be documents and books dynamic illustration: it is an opportunity to animate text documents, making them more attractive for visitors to study. Interactive maps allow to spice huge amounts of the information up and to systemize them, making them easier to orient oneself in. This multimedia solution may be also combined with the projection installations.
